CRN vs ASME U-Stamp: what is the difference, and do you need both?

It is one of the most common questions we get from Indian manufacturers: โWe already have an ASME U-Stamp. Is that not enough to sell in Canada?โ The short answer is no, and understanding why saves a lot of grief.
What the ASME U-Stamp certifies
The U Stamp (and related certification marks like โU2โ, โSโ, โHโ) is a certification mark applied under the ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code. It certifies that the equipment was fabricated under an ASME-accredited quality program, by a shop holding the relevant Certificate of Authorization. It is about how the item was built.
What the CRN certifies
A Canadian Registration Number certifies that the design of the equipment has been reviewed and registered with the safety authority of the Canadian province where it will operate. It is about whether the design is accepted for use in that jurisdiction. See what is a CRN for the full explanation.

A U-Stamp strengthens your CRN application and is often expected, but it does not replace the CRN. Canadian regulations require the design to be registered before the equipment can legally operate, regardless of what fabrication marks it carries.
What this means for you
If your buyer in Canada asks for a CRN, having a U-Stamp is good news (it makes registration smoother) but you still need to register the design.
