CRN registration: frequently asked questions

A CRN (Canadian Registration Number) certifies that the design of a piece of pressure equipment, such as a vessel, heat exchanger, fitting, valve, boiler or piping system, has been reviewed and accepted by the safety authority of the Canadian province where it will operate. Pressure equipment that falls within the scope of CSA B51 and the destination province's pressure-equipment regulations requires a valid CRN for its design before it can be installed or operated there (some equipment below certain size, pressure or category thresholds is exempt). Your buyer asks for it because they cannot commission in-scope equipment without it.

Provincial. There is no single federal CRN. Each province and territory issues CRNs through its own safety authority (TSSA in Ontario, ABSA in Alberta, Technical Safety BC, RBQ in Quebec, TSASK in Saskatchewan, ACI Central for Atlantic Canada and the territories). National pathways exist that let one registration be recognized across multiple provinces under the CRN reconciliation agreement.

An Indian manufacturer absolutely can. The design just has to be registered through the correct provincial authority, with calculations and drawings reviewed and authenticated by a Canadian-licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.). That is precisely what we do for you. You do not need a Canadian entity to hold a CRN.

An ASME U-Stamp (or similar) certifies how the equipment is fabricated. A CRN registers the design with a Canadian provincial authority. They are separate requirements: having a U-Stamp helps your case but does not satisfy the CRN obligation. You generally need the design registered (CRN) before the equipment can operate in Canada.

It depends on the equipment, the province and how complete your documentation is. The biggest delays come from missing or non-conforming documents, not from the regulator. We review your package first and tell you exactly what is needed, which removes most avoidable review cycles. We also offer standard and rush turnaround on our engineering work.

Our engineering fees are fixed-fee and quoted in INR, with government/regulator fees always passed through at cost, never marked up. The exact figure depends on the equipment, the number of jurisdictions and how complete your documents are. We work to a standard rate card.
